THE IDIOT BOX: Who's hot and who's not

Last week was TV Guide’s annual “Sexy” issue, and unlike People’s recent selection of Matt Damon, I have to seriously disagree with TV Guide, which named “Grey’s Anatomy’s” “McDreamy,” Patrick Dempsey, the sexiest star on TV.

Puh-leaze. Dempsey isn’t even the sexiest guy on “Grey’s.” I mean, hello, Justin Chambers, anyone? That man is hot!

I personally think Dempsey had the edge for the cover because his “Made of Honor” was released last weekend and that made for a nice tie-in. Don’t get me wrong; Dempsey is not unattractive. I just don’t think he’s anywhere close to being the sexiest person on TV.

Chambers at least made the list, though. The brothers Burrows (Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell) from “Prison Break” were nowhere to be found on the list.

To me that was the most glaring omission, but I also noticed a distinct lack of funny folks. Not a single spot was awarded to a sitcom star. Surely at the very least Christina Applegate is worthy of inclusion.

I’m sure there were space limitations, but rather than include three cast members from “Gossip Girl,” why not skip one of them in favor of someone else? Say “Ugly Betty’s” Eric Mabius or “ER’s” Parminder Nagra.

I think “Chuck’s” gorgeous Australian star Yvonne Strahovski deserves her spot on the list, but I found it kind of funny that they also named her costar Zackary Levi, the titular Chuck. He’s cute, yes — an adorable sort of Everyman — but smokin’ hot? Not so much.

There were also several reader polls, some of which I agreed with, others I didn’t and still others that I didn’t really care about. Among the ones with which I agreed, 35 percent of people got it right naming Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer (“24”) as the “sexiest badass,” and 37 percent wisely dubbed Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson (“SVU”) the “sexiest smart chick.”

Other good picks were “House’s” Hugh Laurie, heads above his competition for “sexiest curmudgeon” and Summer Glau, the beautiful Cameron in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” for sexiest sidekick. I’m sure if I put my mind to it, I could come up with a sexier cad than Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan from “Grey’s,” but given the choices in the category, I’d say the readers got it right naming him.

Who do you think is the sexiest TV star and why? E-mail me and sound off. I’ll print some of your responses in next week’s column.

Season finales

“Scrubs’” last episode on NBC will air at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Directed by Zach Braff, it’s a “Princess Bride”-esque tale where Dr. Cox turns his day at work into a fairy tale for his son.

While this may be the last show on NBC, it’s likely not the series’ finale. Creator Bill Lawrence has said that if NBC hasn’t given him enough episodes to end the show satisfactorily, he’ll produce a DVD with the final episodes. Also, ABC owns the show and is looking at picking it up for another go-round next season.

Other comedy finales this week are “30 Rock,” 9:30 p.m. tonight, NBC; “Samantha Who?” 9:30 p.m. Monday, ABC; “‘Til Death,” 8 p.m. Wednesday, Fox and “Back to You,” 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Fox. There’s no word yet on whether “Back to You” has been picked up for a second season, so this could be it for the folks at WURG.

There are several dramas ending their seasons this week, too: “Brothers & Sisters,” 10 p.m. Sunday, ABC; “Medium,” 10 p.m. Monday, NBC; “Women’s Murder Club,” 10 p.m. Tuesday, ABC; and “SVU,” 10 p.m. Tuesday, NBC. Also, “House” has part one of its two-part finale at 9 p.m. Monday.

Like “Back to You,” there’s no word yet on a renewal for “Women’s Murder Club,” so this may be its swan song. Across the dial, there are no maybes about it; this “SVU” episode is it for Diane Neal (Casey Novak) and Adam Beach (Detective Lake), both of whom are leaving the show.

And don’t forget the reality shows. “Survivor,” “The Bachelor” and “America’s Next Top Model” are all calling it quits this week. “Survivor” has a whopping three-hour finale beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS, while “The Bachelor” (ABC) and “Top Model” (CW) stick to their usual hourlong formats at 10 p.m. Monday and 8 p.m. Wednesday respectively.

Of note

Tonight’s “CSI” (9 p.m., CBS) is the conclusion of the writer swap done by the show and “Two and a Half Men,” in which the “Men” scribes wrote the episode. On another “Men” note, show star Jon Cryer directs this week’s new episode (9 p.m. Monday, CBS).

“American Gladiators” returns to NBC at 8 p.m. Monday with a two-hour season premiere. The show will introduce three new gladiators (including season one’s male and female winners) as well as two of the season’s seven new games — Rocketball and Vertigo.

For music-minded folks, the latest CMT “Crossroads,” featuring Sara Evans and Maroon 5, debuts at 9 p.m. Friday. And PBS’ “Austin City Limits” has another oldie but goodie when it airs a rerun of last summer’s The Decemberists/Explosions in the Sky show at 11 p.m. Saturday.

If you missed the excellent “SVU” starring Robin Williams, catch it at 10 p.m. Sunday (NBC). And speaking of guest stars, Britney Spears returns to “How I Met Your Mother” at 8:30 p.m. Monday (CBS).

To gear up for the release of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” on May 22, USA is airing the Indiana Jones trilogy (“The Last Crusade,” “Temple of Doom” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”) beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.
