Unmasked JT LeRoy does Sundance?!

JT LeRoy was a child prostitute "lot lizard," forced by his abusive mother to service truckers at West Virginia rest stops. Then, he went on to write acclaimed books about his drug-filled, S&M-fueled, gender-blurring adventures that made him a media star, adopted by a host of celebrities from Carrie Fisher to Gus Van Zandt. JT LeRoy is, of course, now dead because "he" never existed--a literary hoax conclusively unmasked in the past few weeks by the New York Times and others. Charleston native Ann Magnuson, who now lives in LA, was one of many performers taken in by the LeRoy persona, in large part because of how the alleged transgressive young writer supposedly shared her West Virginia roots. Yesterday and today, thegazz.com has been publishing a two-part piece by Magnuson, "My JT LeRoy Article," about how she was suckered by the hoax and how West Virginia was used to make it work. Astoundingly, the person who has been playing JT LeRoy, apparently conceived and concocted by Laura Alpert and "performed" publicly by stepdaughter Samantha Knoop, showed up this past week at the Sundance Film Fest, even after the New York Times and others unmasked the hoax last month. Check out this video of an encounter with the hoaxster at Sundance, posted by the gawker blog. Not much to look at but the audaciousness comes through loud and clear of some folks who should know the party is over, except for their Oprah and Larry King 'tell-all' confessionals.
