RoadScape: Making an Entrance

I love dramatic entrances.
When it comes to approaching cities, it's that first vision over the hill. If you head to Cincinnati for a Reds game, the best approach is coming up Interstate 75 just past Florence, while still in Kentucky. You crest a hill and head down and there, looking true to its nickname as the Queen City, lies Cincinnati spread out before you (with its now matching development on the Newport and Covington sides of the river). In Charleston, the pleasures are smaller although I do enjoy the city's vista as you approach the Virginia Street Exit while driving east on Interstate 64 (a photo I have been lax to attempt for fear of plunging off the bridge into the river and la mort par l'eau). Approaching Charleston along MacCorkle Avenue across the river one encounters this triune assemblage of interstates, which is pleasing in its own minor dramatic key.

If you want a spectacular entrance, try Pittsburgh (especially at night) coming out the Fort Pitt Tunnel from 279 North. No other city makes a first impression like this.
